Timber Care & Maintenance

The key to the longevity of your new furniture is maintenance. Regular cleaning is essential, depending on factors such as the location the furniture is situated, sun, salt, dust, moisture and pollution. These factors can degrade the appearance of your furniture. Please follow the instructions below to maintain the appearance and extend the lifespan of your furniture.
Storage is recommended during winter or wet seasons. Furniture should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated area to help prevent excessive shrinking/expansion of the timber due to humidity.
To reduce the maintenance required, a furniture cover is recommended.

Oiling

NOTE: Your furniture has already been factory treated with an oil preservative.
However, after assembly of your furniture you MUST complete an initial light oiling.
Immediate Oiling of your furniture is crucial to the longevity of your furniture.
STEP 1. After unpacking/assembly of the furniture thoroughly wipe clean/brush to remove any dust particles.
STEP 2. Apply the specialised timber furniture oil lightly using a rag or soft bristled brush. Wipe off any excess oil and allow to dry for (4) four hours. After this time wipe the furniture again with a clean rag to remove any excess oil that may not have penetrated the timber. Repeat wiping off excess oil if necessary.
Your furniture is now protected, however, repeat applications of the timber oil may be
required. Before re-oiling check your furniture for any residue build up. If this occurs a light sanding may be required prior to oiling.
Note: The frequency of oiling will vary according to the climatic conditions in your area and the direct exposure to the elements your furniture is subjected to. We recommend the timber needs to be oiled a minimum of (3) three times per year.

Cleaning

To clean the furniture frames, simply wash with soapy water using a soft cloth or soft bristled brush. Rinse off the furniture with clean water and wipe dry with a soft, clean cloth. The frequency of required cleaning will vary, however the rule of thumb is once a month for externally exposed furniture and 2-3 times a year for fully protected furniture.

About ALUMINIUM

There are a number of reasons why powder coated aluminum is an excellent material for outdoor furniture construction, these include but are not limited too;

  1. EXTREMELY LIGHTWEIGHT:
Homeowners love that aluminum outdoor furniture is so easy to pick up. This allows them to move the pieces around to suit each gathering or rearrange their furniture whenever they wish to refresh the look of their outdoor settings.

  2. VERY DURABLE:
In addition to being lightweight, the aluminum outdoor furniture styles we offer are also known for their solid, reliable construction. This is a wonderful combination in outdoor furniture.  The durable powder coat finish offers further protection from the elements.

  3. RUST RESISTANT:
Aluminum is not vulnerable to corrosion; therefore it will not deteriorate over time. This makes it a particularly ideal choice for those who live in areas prone to high precipitation and humidity or in coastal cities.

  4. MINIMAL MAINTENANCE REQUIRED:
Aluminum outdoor furniture also needs very little upkeep and care to maintain its look and functionality. A light rinse with a garden hose or spot cleaning with mild soap and water is usually sufficient.

About STEEL

There are a number of advantages to steel which makes it an excellent choice for outdoor furniture, these include;

  1. STABLE & DURABLE:
Strength to weight, Steel frames not only offer style, they also offer superior strength and durability. Steel can withstand a higher load capacity per unit area than Aluminum with less risk of fracture. The durable powder coat finish offers further protection from the elements.
  2. IT IS HEAVY:
Steel being a heavier material than aluminum, it is far less likely to be blown around during strong winds. This makes it a particularly ideal choice for those who live in open areas and balconies prone to high wind gusts.
  3. MINIMAL MAINTENANCE REQUIRED:
Steel outdoor furniture frames require very little upkeep and care to maintain its look and functionality. A light rinse with a garden hose or spot cleaning with mild soap and water is usually sufficient. However, as steel is vulnerable to corrosion, we recommend keeping dry and clean and covered when not in use.

HOW DO WE PROTECT STEEL FROM RUST

  1. ACID PICKLING:
Pickling is a metal surface treatment used to remove impurities, such as stains, inorganic contaminants, rust or scale from ferrous metals.  A solution called pickle liquor, which contains strong acids is used to remove the surface impurities. It is commonly used to descale or clean steel in various steel making processes.
  2. PARKERIZING:
The process involves submerging the metal part into a phosphoric acid solution whose key ingredient is often zinc or manganese with varying additional amounts of nitrates , chlorates and copper. In one of the many processes that have been developed, the solution is heated to a temperature of 88–99 °C for a period ranging between 5 and 45 minutes. A stream of small bubbles is emitted from the metal part as the process takes place, when the bubbling stops, the process is complete.
  3. POWDER COATING:
The steel is coated with a powder of enamel, heat curing epoxy or a plastic compound that has been treated with a solvent to help it stick to the surface. The steel part is then placed in an oven. The molten powder doesn't liquefy enough to run or drip, but it does “self level” flowing into itself to fill in small gaps and even out the overall thickness of the coating. As it cools, the coating hardens and permanently seals the steel away from the environment.

GENERAL CUSHION CARE & MAINTENANCE

The following applies to all cushions supplied with the outdoor furniture.
Please keep cushions dry, vacuum regularly, and avoid leaving in direct sunlight for long periods of time. Always use a mild cleanser. Before cleaning the cushions, brush away the loose dirt first. This will help to avoid rubbing in any existing dirt as the fabric is cleaned. If any spots or stains are noted, be sure to remove them right away using mild cleanser. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and allow filling to dry before further use.
Do not use solvent type cleaners, do not use machine wash or dry clean. Never apply heat to cushion fabrics.
To guard against fading, any outdoor furniture exposed to direct sunlight or the everyday elements, we recommend the use of outdoor furniture covers. For cushions exposed to direct sunlight or the everyday elements, we recommend storage of cushions when not in use.
